I am the type of person that typically reads a book from cover to cover; I can only think of 2 books I haven't finished that I started; one is "The Kings Assassin"In fact, I only finished the prologue. It was that bad.
The writing is clunky and the editing is horrendous. I honestly felt like I was reading something a 9 year old would write. I will probably try to read the first three chapters to see if it improves (and if it does I'll revise my review). But, until then I can't do anything but warn people away from this book.

We are confronted with a murder at the beginning, and it is a King.In this fantasy world, which resembles the middle ages with sword fights, hunting, castles, and intrigue, the difference is cleverly revealed when the reader is introduced to Aislynn. She is a trained assassin, and marks on her arms reveal she comes from a line dedicated to this task. These assassins have a duty to defend the King of Bacovia, as their country, Evendell has a peace treaty. With the new King, Eryk, in danger from also being murdered, Aislynn has her hands full in trying to identify the would-be assassins, as well as coping with his increased fondness for her, as he has a duty to find a wife. This is a fast paced story, well written, but I have reservations about its intended audience, though understand it is aimed at Young Adults. I believe the blossoming romance will put off the lads, and as the epilogue suggests another book, believe the author must indicate her target readers.Some mistakes occur, such as having a church, then depicting candles lit for the 'Gods.' Maybe a 'temple' would be better, and I would have liked to read more detail about the coronation of Eryk, rather than just a sentence. However, this is a very good debut book for the author, and I can recommend it. Brian Lux (award winning 'Court of Foxes')
If it were not for the editing problems I would rate it at a 4 or 5 star. I am not the worlds greatest editor and I miss most things when reading through the first time. OH MY GOODNESS M.M. Brownlow should be EXTREMELY pissed off at the editors of the digital version of her book.
If you can make it through ALL of the MASSIVE amounts of editing problems you should love the book. Great story although I was able to figure it out just after the characters were introduced. I really did like the book but I absolutely hated the editing problems that were from, literally, the start to finish.
Brownlow brings to us a wonderful and fantastic story that revolves around a new King, Eryk and his protector, Aislynn, who also happens to be a highly trained assassin. The King's Assassin pulls you into the world of Brownlow and the lands of Evendell and Bacovia.
As Robert Jordan thrilled readers with his Wheel of Time series, Brownlow has created for us a new world of magic, intrigue, murder and love in The King's Assassin. Every lover of fantasy will greatly enjoy this fast-paced story. The characters have depth and wit, the scenes are well-written and detailed.
Fantasy is favorite genre and I thoroughly enjoyed this tale about an unlikely king, his unwanted protector, the conspiracies that unfold, the loves that blossom or are denied and the kingdoms that are in danger.

This is book one of the King's Assassin Collection.
The kingdoms of Bacovia and Evendell are joined via a magical pact made centuries ago. Every monarch of Bacovia is protected by a bodyguard who is selected from trained Evendell assassins. Aislynn (princess of Evendell) is the latest bodyguard to be selected by the magical pact. She is unimpressed with her charge Prince Eryk due his arrogance at their first meeting. She befriends Byron the captain of the guard.
Eryk's best friend and chief advisor Branden hopes that Eryk will marry his sister Alexius. However, Eryk falls in love with Aislynn and so does Byron. The princess does her best to avoid this triangle as she isn't interested in marriage.
Hostile emissaries from Madelia plan to assassinate Eryk and only Aislynn can protect him as he's useless with a sword and more likely to hurt her than help her in a fight (this is a refreshing change from the usual male heroes in novels of this genre who are well able to defend themselves).
A few editing errors that can be corrected with proof reading.
Interesting novel, kept my attention throughout.

I found this to be a very very quick read with a very very simple world. That's not always a bad thing, and I was happy not to be bogged down with too much history. I didn't have to think at all while I read this book, which is both good and bad. If you want something to pass the time by, this would be a good book for that.
My main problem is that the woman (Aislynn), who was protecting the prince/king (Eryk), seemed to be hurt a lot or was not always by the prince/king's side. For a person sent to protect him, she seemed content to spar with another dude and leave Eryk by himself. I think her link to him did little to ease my concerns. The attacks seemed a little too planned for me, too convenient, and too easily thwarted. Maybe because of the lack of a crazy world and deep history, I was lulled into a content mindlessness and missed more of the deeper details that could explain this. Even as I say it, I'm not sure my mindlessness was a bad thing. I was content while reading. So, if you've just read a crazy complicated book and need a mind break, this would be an enjoyable read, light and quick.
Loved the settings. The story created a wonderful mental movie with great historical and creadible references. The characters were entertaining yet none overshadowed the other. A nice touch which left a want to know more in the incoming sequel.
